Day 66: Cardiac Care With Mr. Greek

I have gone to my fair share of pageants. Tonight, however, was a first. The Gamma Phi girls and I attended Mr. Greek, which was presented by the Alpha Phi sorority house. Mr. Greek is this particular sorority's philanthropic event. The entrance fee of $5 will now be donated to Women's Cardiac Care. If you didn't know, heart disease is the number 1 killer for women in the nation.
(The contestants)

Each contestant was representing a different fraternity. Like all other pageants, the boys had several phases of competition. They included talent, swimwear, onstage question and formal wear. This whole event was interesting to say the least and made me appreciate my pageant world. With that said, the guys were hysterical and the money went to a good cause.
 (The winner in talent.)

(The crowning moment!)

Day 65: EWU Gamma Phi Make-up Drive

Only four days left in the EWU's 26 days of kindness. Day 22 included a make-up drive put on by the Gamma Phi Beta sorority! The make-up donated in this drive will be donated to the Youth Women's Christian Association. The YWCA is a national organization and dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. For more information, you can click here.

To help, I went to a local grocery and picked up a thing of Maybelline foundation. Then I ran by the Gamma Phi house to drop off my donation! I've always been taught that make-up does not identify a person for who they are, it only enhances them. However, I also completely understand the feeling of looking great with a new compact of foundation or a vibrant new lip color. And, if you are like me, then maybe you don't always realize how fortunate you are to be able to run to the store to pick up a new tube of mascara. This was a cool way to give back and help contribute to empowering women.

God bless,
Kailee Dunn

Day 64: Shamrock Shakes for the Sheilahs

March means St. Patrick's Day. St. Patrick's Day means one thing. SHAMROCK SHAKES. I love them a little too much I would say and wait for March every year to get them. Silly really. But today I was hanging out with two of my lovely friends, when they sprung it on me that they had never tried a shamrock shake. Dumbfounded, I immediately demanded that we took a trip to McDee's so I could treat them to a shake.

The luck of the irish were with them and me because I got my shake and they both throughly enjoyed it. I know this wasn't much, but I want everyone should try this shake at least once in their life and I was glad I was able to be there when they first tasted their decedent dessert. I'm still not sure why I enjoy the shake so much, but I do know it sure is tasty!

God Bless,
Kailee

Day 63: 7 Days of Change- Reality TV For A Cause

This afternoon my family headed back to the Northwest. When we finally arrived at our lovely abode, I got my Sevenly shirt in the mail that supported those effected by Superstorm Sandy (Day 52). In case you missed that post, let me quickly explain. Sevenly chooses one cause to raise money for, for seven days. Seven dollars of your purchase will then be donated to that week's cause.

While I was researching Sevenly a while back, I came across a very cool concept. They were trying to create a reality TV show that is titled "7 Days of Change". Below is the preview!

As we all know, things these days don't come cheap. For Sevenly to actually start their show, they are asking for donations of as little as $1. For $5, you will receive a digital copy of the pilot show. Highly intrigued- and already in love with the company- I decided I couldn't help but donate the $5 to see how incredible this new reality turned out. To learn more about the donations and the campaign, you can click here. I am so excited to see what they will do with this. I think the concept is an incredible idea and seriously needed. It is about time someone shed some positive light on the reality TV world.

Good luck Sevenly in your future campaigns and tackling the TV world!

World change is how I roll,

Day 62: Homeruns For Hope

I am doing this a little backwards, but I thought this was so cool that I had to share! Before the game started yesterday, a very special man got to run the bases as part of Homeruns For Hope! This is a program affiliated with the Cancer Centers Treatment of America.

Homeruns For Hope allows cancer survivors to walk the bases before baseball games and, in yesterday's case, throw out the first pitch! As the participant ran the bases the whole crowd stood to cheer him on. And, in my opinion, the coolest part of the whole event was when both teams approached the dirt to high five Walter as he ran by.

During the game, my mom and I stopped by their tent they had set up. There I got to meet the man who ran the bases at last years game and he gave me a magazine that he was on the cover of. He was a year free from men's breast cancer. The tent also had an enumerate amount of brochures, flyers and goodies to hand out to make others aware of the Cancer Centers of America.

Finally, after the game the audience was asked to participate in the Stroll of Honor. My family and I went on to the field and strolled the bases. Once we reached home plate, we were then asked to announce the cancer patient we were walking in honor of. (I have a video I hope to upload when I get home) It was first cool to be on the field that the Mariners and Dodgers were on, but it was even more amazing to honor our loved ones in front of the whole stadium.

While I was on the field, I met Walter and his mother! He was such an amazing guy! :)

God bless,
Kailee

Day 61: Had Some Heart

Who will be Miss Pierce County 2013? Tonight, we will find out! Good luck to all of the contestants! I wish I could be there. But before then, it is time to feature another one of my Miss Washington sisters. Miss Pierce County 2012 is Alexandria Henderson!

Meet Alexandria Henderson
What is your platform titled?
AH: Gotta Have Heart; 30-for-30 promotes walking 30 minutes a day for 30 days to promote heart disease awareness and prevention...We are going to pick it up again for April (since it has 30 days.)

How can others get involved with your platform?
AH: Maybe share this Facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/GottaHaveHeartW.A.L.K

I also would add that you can do the kindness for your body and challenge yourself to a 30 minute walk like I am!

Why did you choose this platform?
My favorite uncle died of heart disease at the age of 35. Far too young to lose a family member. Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in America, beating out all other forms of cancer combined. Not many people know that.

After the game, my family and I headed to Oldtown Scottsdale! This little place is so beautiful, especially at sunset! Fortunately, everything you'd need and want is within walking distance. Here I was able to get my 30 minutes of walking in.

Day 60: Shared A Smile

OH, the simple joy of a smile. :)

Have you smiled much today?! Well, I would like to share a smile with you today! So, what if I told you a joke. I'm going to warn you, I am not good with jokes, but this one always get me.
Why does Peter Pan always fly? Because he can Never Land. Oh boy, that one never gets old....:) HAHA there you go!

Didn't work? Watch any of these videos that make me smile and I am SURE I will get you to smile also...and possibly cry.

What, you may ask, is Kailee up to? Well my friends, today is national Share A Smile Day! I have taken this opportunity, like much of you should, to smile at anyone and everyone you see. It is amazing what a smile can do for your attitude and others! I'm not going to lie, I do catch road rage from time to time. But, I was having a joyous morning and decided to smile at others as they drove by and allowed others into my lane with a smile and a head-nod. I was blown away by how calm I was while driving and how much more blissful I felt! Again, it is amazing the power a smile can contain.

The day is from far over, share a smile or laugh with others today! I realize that this should be an everyday occurrence, but I dare you to smile at everyone today! Everyone has their battles they are fighting and maybe your beautiful grin is exactly what they needed. Happiness is contagious!

Here is a poem written by a 13 year old about the power of smile! So true.

Smile
She smiled at a sorrowful stranger...
The smile seemed to make him feel better...
He remembered past kindnesses of a friend
And wrote him a thank you letter...
The friend was so pleased with the thank you
That he left a large tip after lunch...
The waitress, surprised by the size of the tip,
Bet the whole thing on a hunch...
The next day she picked up her winnings,
And gave part to a man on the street...
The man on the street was grateful;
For two days he'd had nothing to eat...
After he finished his dinner,
He left for his small dingy room...
He didn't know at that moment
That he might be facing his doom...
On the way he picked up a shivering puppy
And took him home to get warm...
The puppy was very grateful
To be in out of the storm...
That night the house caught on fire...
The puppy barked the alarm...
He barked till he woke the whole household
And saved everybody from harm...
One of the boys that he rescued
Grew up to be President...
All this because of a simple smile
That hadn't cost a cent...

Smile & God bless,
Kailee :)
